Lincolnshire Record Office was established in 1948 and brought together records collected by the Lindsey, Kesteven and Holland County Councils and the Lincoln Diocesan Records Office.
The Archive was originally known as the Lincolnshire Archives Committee.
It is now part of the County Council’s Economy and Culture department, and is based in offices in St Rumbold Street, Lincoln.
The resources held by the Archive include books and periodicals, diaries, documents, journals, letters, manuscripts, maps, newspapers and photographs.
These resources incorporate items of international significance, including the Bishops Rolls and Registers.
Whether you are researching the history of a house, tracing your family history, conducting research for a school, college, or university assignment, or studying the history of your local area, you will find the documents held of use.
The knowledgeable and helpful staff are always on hand to help should you have any questions or require advice or assistance.

Lincolnshire Record Office provides a free car park behind the building for visitor’s use. The entrance is from Rosemary Lane which is to the east of the archive. It is controlled by an automated barrier, which automatically lifts when a vehicle enters, so drivers will have to gain the exit code from Reception.
If assistance is required, an intercom is provided on the Car Park keypad. If this car park is full, or you wish to park elsewhere, there are pay and display car parks in St Rumbold Street.
Booking
If you need to consult original documents, it is recommended to book these resources before visiting to avoid disappointment and to save time when you arrive.
You are able to pre-order up to six documents. Please note you are only able to utilise this service if you are a current reader – new readers can check a document’s availability, but cannot book online.
If you wish to examine a map or consult resources on microfilm or microfiche, booking in advance is essential. You are also required to book a study table or study booth in advance if required.
It is also prudent to book in advance if you wish to use your own laptop as there are a limited number of electrical sockets.
When booking, you are asked to provide details of your name, full address, date and time you wish to reserve, and any special equipment you need to access such as a microfiche, computer, table etc.
Photography and Photocopying
You are allowed to take your own photographs of documents, but must purchase a photography permit before taking any photographs. Some documents cannot be photographed because they are fragile and easily damaged.
On payment of a small fee, you are able to take copies of information on microfilm or microfiche if you use the microfiche printer in the search room.
If you wish to use images for anything other than personal use, you must contact the Collections Access Team Leader.
Computers
Three computers with free internet access are available in Lincolnshire Record Office. You are able to reserve a time slot to use a computer when you visit.
Accessibility
The building is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs. Doors to both the building and searchroom are automatic, but staff will have to help you to access the searchroom because a security lock is in place. A lift provides access to the floors within the building, and they have disabled toilet facilities.
A hearing loop is in operation at reception.
You are able to utilise magnifying aids if required. Guide dogs are welcome in the Office.
Refreshments
Refreshments are available in the Archive.
Research Service
If you are unable to visit in person, they provide a research service. For further information regarding any charges made for this service, please visit the appropriate section of their Fees and Charges page.
